Jobs That Pay Well Without a Degree in Australia
The short answer: plenty of Australian jobs pay $80,000 to $175,000 with no university degree. Almost all of them require a Certificate III, a trade licence, or a specific ticket — qualifications that take months to four years rather than a full degree, and that you earn a wage while completing.

Low-stress jobs that still pay well
Not everyone wants a 12-hour shift in 40-degree heat. If you are after something steadier, these pay above the national median without the physical demands or the roster:
- Bookkeeper — $55,000-$90,000. Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, roughly a year part-time. Strong demand from small business, and genuinely flexible.
- Forklift operator — $58,000-$78,000. A High Risk Work Licence takes a few days. See forklift jobs in Perth.
- Government administration — $60,000-$85,000. Often accessible via a traineeship. See government jobs.
- Security officer (corporate or control room) — $65,000-$80,000, and largely indoor.
How long each pathway actually takes
Days to weeks
Forklift licence (LF), White Card, RSA, security licence. These are the fastest returns on a few hundred dollars you can get. A forklift ticket typically lifts your hourly rate immediately.
Six to twelve months
Certificate III in Individual Support opens aged care work. Certificate III in Early Childhood opens childcare. Both sectors have legally mandated staffing ratios, which means the demand is structural rather than cyclical.
Three to four years
A trade apprenticeship. You earn while you learn — first-year apprentices earn $36,000-$45,000 rising to around $65,000 in the final year — and finish with no student debt and a qualification that is in shortage nationally. Adult apprentice rates apply if you are over 21, which makes a mid-career switch more viable than most people assume.
The honest trade-offs
The highest paying no-degree roles are concentrated in resources, and that comes with conditions worth being clear-eyed about: rosters that take you away from home for one to three weeks at a time, 12-hour shifts, pre-employment medicals and drug and alcohol screening, and physically demanding conditions.
The roles that avoid those conditions — bookkeeping, administration, corporate security — pay well relative to the national median but not six figures. That is the real trade-off, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by default.
Where to start today
If you have no qualification and want the fastest route to a decent wage: get a White Card and start in labouring, then use trade assistant work to find an apprenticeship. Many WA employers fill apprenticeships from their own trade assistant pool.
