Online Job Ads Rose 2.7% in July: How Perth Job Seekers Should Read It
Australian online job ads rose 2.7% in July but were lower over the year. Here is how Perth job seekers and employers should interpret the data.

Australian online job advertisements rose 2.7 per cent in July 2026 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Jobs and Skills Australia's Internet Vacancy Index. Most major occupation groups increased over the month, led by Labourers and Sales Workers, but national advertisements remained lower than a year earlier.
The mixed result is more informative than a simple “jobs are up” headline. A monthly increase can occur within a softer annual trend. The public summary also says capital cities continued to record annual declines while regional Australia recorded an increase over the year. It does not, by itself, establish that Perth ads rose 2.7 per cent.
Advertisements are a demand signal, not a job count
The Internet Vacancy Index measures online advertisements captured from selected sources. One advertisement may cover more than one position, employers may advertise the same role in several places, and some hiring happens without an online ad. The index is useful for direction and comparison, but it should not be described as the number of unemployed people, new jobs created or people hired.
Seasonal adjustment also matters. It is designed to make month-to-month movement easier to interpret by accounting for recurring seasonal patterns. The 2.7 per cent result is therefore not simply a raw count of extra advertisements placed in July.
What this means for Perth job seekers
The rise suggests that online recruitment regained some momentum nationally during July. Perth candidates should still use local evidence when deciding where to focus. Search results, employer career pages and the age of individual advertisements give a more direct view of the opportunities available now.
Sales and labouring candidates may take some encouragement from the occupation-group movement, while remembering it is national. Retail Supervisor demand received special attention in the report because the occupation has recorded growth in both ads and employment, particularly in regional areas. Supervisory experience can also demonstrate transferable skills in scheduling, safety, customer service and team leadership.

What this means for employers
A market with lower annual ad volumes can still be competitive for particular people. Employers should compare response quality, not just application totals. If an ad draws many irrelevant applications, the title, location, salary and essential requirements may be unclear.
Retail and frontline employers recruiting potential supervisors can widen the pool by recognising leadership evidence from adjacent settings. Candidates may have supervised shifts, trained colleagues, resolved safety issues or handled opening and closing responsibilities without holding the exact target title.
The Perth number to watch next
The next useful step is to inspect the detailed vacancy report for WA and Perth-region movements when available, then compare several months rather than one release. Jobs In Perth will avoid assigning the national 2.7 per cent result to Perth unless the geographic data supports it.
Methodology note: Online advertisements are not equivalent to vacancies, hires or employment. National occupation movements should not be presented as Perth-specific results.
